The Delta State Government has approved the establishment of biotechnology laboratories and a bio-resource park for the biotechnology research centre as one of over 100 centres to be used for the Microsoft Training Academy earmarked for the State
In a related development, the State Government will soon commence the implementation of a mentorship scheme for public primary and secondary schools that is tailored to raise the standard of education and instil sound moral values in students across the State.
Briefing the media on the outcome of the state executive council meeting in Asaba, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Oma Djebah, said the biotech laboratories and bio-resource park would be established in collaboration with the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro and the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NBDA).
The Information Commissioner who briefed the press alongside his counterparts in the Directorate of Science and Technology, Hon. Anthony Akpomiemie and the Ministry of Environment, Barr. Bello Orubebe, said the biotech project would result in the development of tissues culture and incubation, strengthening, and production of grass-cutters, snail, and hatcheries.
The mentorship scheme according to Djebah, spells out specific roles assigned to carefully chosen respectable persons to be appointed as mentors to provide moral inspiration to students of schools located in their respective communities.
On the environment sector, the Information Commissioner said the state government has given approval for erosion control measures to check perennial flooding of Uzere town in Isoko South local government area of the State. He said measures approved include mechanical clearing; de-siltation of 13km of three natural waterways; and construction of 2304m of drains and culverts.
Djebah also informed the media of council approval for the renovation and upgrading of sport facilities at the Delta State University, Abraka.
