THE Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Hope Eghagha, has charged students of tertiary institutions in the country to take advantage of their tertiary education to equip themselves so as meet up with the challenges of securing job for themselves upon graduation.

Eghagha gave the charge while addressing staff and students of the state Polytechnic, Ozoro. He asked the students to develop and depend on their individual skills for employment when they eventually graduate.

The commissioner, who visited the institution last week Friday in continuation of his familiarization tour to tertiary institutions in the State, said the Ministry wants to be sure that the knowledge the students acquired in the schools was enough for them to go out and make it.

He said: "We want to be sure that what we give our students is enough for them to go out and make a living. The students should develop and depend on individual skills they have acquired in the schools for employment when they graduate."

While commending the management of the institution for adhering to due process, he said he was happy that they were giving their students practical knowledge that would make them relevant in the society, adding that the Ministry was ready to encourage entrepreneurship among the students and challenged them to open workshops in the town.

Eghagha restated that "those of you in the engineering section, from what I saw here should go and open workshops and I promise to showcase you. You should depend on your skills to survive in the society. Let's learn how to market what we have. We should learn how to train students to be independent."

He said the Ministry would do everything to encourage higher institutions in the State to generate funds so as to meet their demands and urged the schools management to stop complaining; rather they should look out for solutions that could help their schools to grow.

Earlier in his speech, Rector of the Polytechnic, Professor Bernard Ejechi said they were happy that a seasoned educationist was at the helm of affairs of the State tertiary institutions adding that they were all looking forward to the advancement of technological education in this dispensation.
