Delta State House of Assembly amends DESOPADEC Bill.

The State House of Assembly has amended the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, law 2004, without tampering with the three year tenure for the Chairman and members of the Commission.

The amendment which was considered and adopted at the committee of the whole House with the Speaker, Honourable Sam Obi as chairman, however, prescribed a single tenure of four years for the Commission's secretary.

The Secretary, according to the amendment should be a serving civil servant not below the rank of a Director and should be appointed by the State Governor.

The Chairman and members of the Commission are to be appointed by the Governor subject to the confirmation of the State Assembly, while the appointment of the chairman shall be on a rotational basis.

No oil producing area should succeed itself in, the position of chairman until the rotational circle among the oil producing ethnic nationalities has been completed.

The amendment provided for two Special Assistants one of whom should be appointed from among the staff of the commission and one Personal Assistant, while the members and secretary of the commission are entitled to one special Assistant and one Personal Assistant each.
