Uduaghan Advocates Resolution of Petitions Before Swearing In.
DELTA State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, has joined in the call for resolution of all electoral disputes before winners of elections are sworn into office.
According to him, this will enable such persons settle down to governance without any distraction.
Uduaghan, who was represented by his deputy, Prof. Amos Utuama, made the call in his remark at the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Section of Legal Practice (SLP) 3rd Annual Conference in Kaduna Wednesday.
He said, “we pray that during the cause of your deliberations, you will also give thought to this so that election petitions can be terminated before governors, deputy governors, presi-dents and vice-presidents are sworn-in. This will ensure that they operate without any legal distrac-tions.”
He urged the conference to come out with policies that will enhance legal practice that, “particularly contri-butes to our democratic practice because it is ourselves, as lawyers, that take up the podium after the elections, to resolve disputes.
So, we are very critical elements of the resolution of our democratic disputes”.
Lauding the theme of the conference, “Changing Times, Changing Strategies,” Uduaghan said “if we cannot change strategies, then we cannot survive.
“Therefore, as a body of lawyers operating overtime, we must also change, we must be part of the changing legal regime and we must also be part of formulation of new strategies”.
