Deltans to Smile Soon as State Govt. Partners UNICEF on Provision of Social Amenities

Delta State Government and UNICEF have entered into agreement to intervene in the social life of Deltans and accelerate the provision of basic amenities such as water, health, basic education among others.

The State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan signed for the State Government, while the Chief of UNICEF Office in Nigeria , Mr. Karim Akadiri, signed on behalf of UNICEF.

Speaking at the brief ceremony the UNICEF representative in Nigeria, Mr.Karim Akadiri commended Dr. Uduaghan’s administration for the laudable achievement recorded in the maternal and child health care programme.

Mr. Akadiri said the mile stone achievement will drastically reduce infant and maternal mortality in the State.

He also commended the State government for promoting the millennium development goals such that government agencies, departments, ministries as well as local governments have taken giant steps to actualize the goal.

The UNICEF boss commended the governor for approving the hosting in the State of the zonal network for children holding in the State next month and expressed the hope that the meeting will be a success.

The UNICEF representative appealed to the State governor to complete the ten year education strategic plan to establish and appoint committees for each school.

Stressing the importance of potable water and good sanitation in the life of the people, Mr. Akadiri appealed to the governor to direct local governments in the State to strongly fund water schemes so that the people will enjoy uninterrupted supply of potable water.

In his brief remarks the State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan promised to render all necessary assistance to ensure that his administration and UNICEF partner to improve the wellbeing of Deltans.

Dr. Uduaghan expressed delight at the involvement of local governments in the present exercise even as he said that local governments have strategic roles to play.

He said his administration has soft spot for maternal and child care health delivery programme and recalled how pregnant and nursing mothers enjoy free pre-natal and ante-natal treatment.

Emphasizing further he said “The health of children and women are adequately taking care of. In fact the pre-natal and antenatal treatment is free in the State. This is contributing significantly to growth.

The Governor who said a surveillance team has been established in the State to monitor the reduction of HIV in the State promised to reduce the decease to zero level.

The Governor commended UNICEF for its interest in the welfare of women and children just as he expressed gratitude to the body for strengthening growth and development in the world.

In his words, “UNICEF is central to achievements in millennium development goals. It is contributing so much to the welfare of children and women in the rural areas, we will continue to partner with you and make this programme a success.”
