May Discuss Special Convention.

The 46th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is to hold today in Abuja to consider and resolve several national issues, including the date for the planned special convention and a summit for its founding fathers.

Expected to be chaired by President Umaru Yar'Adua and attended by Vice President Goodluck Jonathan, the Senate President David Mark, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, and all PDP governors, today's NEC meeting is the last in the year.

Although the agenda of the meeting was not made public by the national secretariat, it is expected that one of the issues that will be resolved is the date for the special convention recommended in May by the Bello Mohammed-led National Reconciliation Committee Report Review Committee for the purpose of ratifying certain amendments to the party's constitution.

The committee, which reviewed the Ekwueme Reconciliation Report, had recommended that for internal democracy to be involved in the exercise, the observance of due process for the proposed amendments would necessitate the holding of a special convention not later than first quarter of 2009.

At its last 45th meeting on August 5, the NEC deliberated extensively on the Mohammed report and resolved to propose an amendment to the provisions of the party's constitution that deals with the leadership, membership and functions of the Board of Trustees (BoT).
