Uduaghan Commends Falconets as Delta wins Gov. Amaechi Cup.
Delta has not only continued to dominate in Nigerian sports, it has been prominent in producing stars that win laurels and promote the image of the country.
Just as six of the girls who won silver in Germany in the female Under 20 FIFA World Cup were from Delta Queens, the state Judo team were in Port-Hacourt outshining all states in the 1st Governor Chibuike Amaechi National Open Judo Championship which took place at the Civic Center in Port_Harcourt, Rivers State, July 27th – 30th, 2010.
Delta won overall with 8 Gold, 2 Silver and 8 Bronze medals. Lagos State came second with 4 Gold Medals which 3rd place went to River State with 3 Gold and Edo State came fourth with 2 Gold medals.
The four day competition attracted athletes from 29 States, Civil Defence Corps, Customs, Navy and club sides.
Meanwhile, the Governor of Delta State Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has congratulated the Silver winning Nigeria U_20 female team, the FALCONETS for their brilliant performance at the just concluded Junior world cup competition in Germany.
The hard fighting Nigerian team which paraded six players from the Delta Queens Football Club of Asaba, lost 0_2 to the German female U_20 team to clinch the silver medal, a feat that is yet to be achieved by any African Team since the inception of the 8_year old competition.
The very excited Governor Uduaghan has consequently approved the release of the outstanding entitlements of the Delta Queens Football Club for the current season.
It would be recalled that Amaju Pinnick, Chairman of Delta State Sports Commission pleaded passionately with President Goodluck Jonathan to reconsider the ban of Nigeria Teams from international competitions to enable these girls showcase their talents at this competition. The Delta girls, Joy Jegede, Rebecca, Kalu, Onyiyechi Ukonu, Oparonozie Desire, Mabel Eguonu and Ohale Osinachi, did just that.
In the Athletics scene, Blessing Okagbare of Delta State is also the reigning fastest woman and record holder in 100 m event in the African continent.
She also won Gold in the Long Jump event and teamed up to win the 4 x100 m at the just concluded African Athletics Championship in Nairobi, Kenya.
