Delta State Governor Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has called on the Federal Road safety Commission to organize constant workshops and seminars for special marshals as some of them exceed their powers.

Dr. Uduaghan who made the call when the Corp Marshal of the Commission Mr. Osita Chidoka paid him a courtesy call in Asaba said some of the Special Marshals in the state are over zealous and exercise more powers than they should.

He said the special Marshals should know the limit of their power explaining that such knowledge will check their excesses.

The Governor also requested the Commission to assist in training convoy Drivers so that only drivers certified fit and issued with certificate of proficiency can be allowed to drive in the convey of the Governor or other important personalities.

Dr. Uduaghan who observed that some drivers in the convoy of VIPs are reckless said their training by FRSC will sort out the wheat from the chaff.

Speaking further he said “some of the convoy driver are reckless and take advantage of being in the convoy to be irresponsible and misbehave in movements. It is even worse sometime when the Governor’s are not in the convoy”.

The Governor who frowned at the slow rate at which motorcycle riders are complying with the use of crash Helmet urged the corps marshal to enforce the use of crash helmet in the state.

Dr. Uduaghan who accused motorcycle riders of shying away from the use of crash helmet said their abstinence will expose them to danger.

He said the use of crash helmet has the potential of reducing the number of deaths among motorcycle riders and urged them to cooperate with the commission in the interest of their lives.

Promising that he will do his best to embark on massive road construction to make roads in the state motorable the Governor put it this way “on our part, we are going to embark on massive road construction and continue to increase street lights. This will make the roads motorable and drivers will see clearly in the night”.

He praised the corps marshal for doing a good job even as he said that Mr. Chidoka’s performance shows that we have young men who can excel in their job.

The Governor promised to look into the request of the commission for vehicles and a befitting office.

The corps marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission Osita Chidoka in his remarks said plans were underway to revoke all driving licenses being held by commercial drivers in the country.

Mr. Chidoka said the present system of issuing driving license is faulty and assured that a new system that will emerge soon will be faster and shall erase the short coming in the present process.

He regretted that due to the faulty system only about 3.5 million drivers license has so far been recorded as issued arguing that with the population of the country we should not have less than 20 million drivers license in our records.

The corps marshal said the new system will bring together all the state holders such as the VIO, Licensing office and the FRSC and make the exercise less cumbersome.

He disclosed that accidents have been occurring more frequently on our roads since the beginning of the year and urged states in the Federation to play crucial roles in the management of safety and accidents.

Describing the trend as dangerous Mr. Chidoka said effort should be made by all to reduce night journeys.

Highlight of the visit was the decoration of the Governor as the leader of the special corps marshal in the State.
