DTSG Donates Relief Materials Worth Millions of Naira to Riverine Communities.
The Delta State Government through the Rehabilitation Committee has distributed relief materials worth several millions of Naira to various Ijaw and Itsekiri Communities where people are trapped as a result of the clash between the Joint Task Force (JTF) and some armed youths in Gbaramatu.
The Rehabilitation Committee which got the blessing of the JTF authorities to distribute the relief materials to the communities were led to the communities by Chief Couple Oromoni (Member) along with representatives of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigerian Red Cross.
Contrary to report in some quarters that the communities were completely deserted the committee found people in the communities visited and distributed the relief materials at Opuede-bubor, Okpele-Ama, Ugborodo, Azama, Enekorogha, Igoba, Kunukunuma, and Oporoza communities.
Most of the communities got 40 bags of rice, 2 bags of Beans, 100 tubers of yam, Two 20 litres can of palm oil, 4 bags of salt, 6 bags of garri, 8 baskets of starch, two cartons of frozen fish, 50 bags of water and 6 sacks of Tapioca, bigger communities got more.
Chief Oromoni appealled to the people to exercise a little patience as more food will be sent to then, his words "please I want you to know that these food items are small but we will come back again with more food until the waterways will be open to enable you move around more freely."
In her response, Mrs. Savanna Yatere who received the items on behalf of Opuede-bubor people said "we thank the governor for his well thought out idea, it has not been easy for us, we are trapped, we want peace to return, also tell him to bring more food as this ones will not be able to take care of us many of our people ran deep into the forest and we would need to reach them with these material,"
She appealled to both JTF and the armed youths to cease fire and give peace a chance because the outcome of war is sufferings particularly for the innocent ones.
At Ugborodo, Mr. Tunu Onuwaje, Community Youth Leader who received the food items on behalf of the people expressed gratitude to the state government for the initiative, "we are indeed grateful to the government, we have had terrible times as we cannot travel since the crisis started.
We want peace, we urge every party to tow the line of peace, and we also want more because these food cannot last more than two days"
Chief Oromoni thanked the community for the manner they have conducted themselves while the crisis lasted, he also assured them that more food item will come.
