Electricity for 1,509 towns in Delta State.
NO fewer than 1,509 towns in 25 local government areas of Delta State are to be supplied electricity by the Delta Energy Distribution Company (DELDISCO) if the economic-revolution plan of the state government in partnership with international investors and financial institutions to build four gas-powered generating stations in 24 months at the cost of $2 billion sails through.
An estimated 872,977 households, 20,000 commercial enterprises and 1,000 industrial customers are projected to be covered in the distribution scope, while the state government has earmarked over 150 hectares of land for proposed substations.
The technology package of the project will be supplied by the General Electric Corporation (GEC), United States of America. Vanguard learnt that 100 megawatts out of the 2, 5000 megawatts that is expected to be produced in the first phase of the project will be supplied through 330KV lines to the various local governments.
"The Delta State Energy Transmission Company (DELTRANSCO)", a privileged source confided to our reporter, yesterday, "will maintain a step-down transmission substation at each local government area, which would transfer power through 330KV/132KV transformers to the DELDISCO".
Chairman of the Delta State Integrated Development Programme Committee, Mr. Godwin Akpobire and other officials were said to be putting finishing touches to the take-off plan of the project, which has received the endorsement of elders, communities and militant groups in the state.
"The DELDISCO distribution system originates from the distribution substation in each town, which will step down power to 415V for distribution to streets through overhead lines and underground cables.
"Only major towns with local requirements will be equipped with underground substations with 415 V lines running underground through the streets to connect each house. The distribution of electricity from one town to another town within the same local government area will be connected via 32 KV lines", my source disclosed.
According to him, "Power distribution to industrial areas will transmitted via 132 KV transmission lines into dedicated step-down substations, which will drop the voltage to a desired level and distributed via a service drop line at a level defined by the requirements of each industrial customer".
"The distribution system to be established by DELDISCO consists of all the facilities and equipment connecting the transmission system (to be owned and managed by DELTRANSCO) to the customer's equipment and the distribution system connects with the transmission system at a 330/132KV substation and includes the lines, poles, transformers and other equipment needed to deliver electric power to customers at the required voltage", he added.
