DTSG commends Escravos for Peace Initiative
Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has commended the Escravos Gas-to-liquid project (EGLP) saying it has helped in ensuring peace in the State.
Governor Uduaghan made the commendation in an interview with journalists after undertaking a guided tour of the EGLP site at the Chevron Escravos terminal recently. He explained that the project was critical as youths who were restive have been engaged through employment and contracts.
The Governor disclosed that the recent berthing of the cargo ship that brought two giant reactors at the Escravos terminal has showed that the waterways in Delta State were safe. He described the arrival of the ship on the shores of Delta State as a major milestone in the EPGL and said it was significant for the rest of the world to know that the ship docked safely without any harassment.
Governor Uduaghan appealed to members of the Senate Committee on Gas to ensure the survival of the project as Deltans are eagerly awaiting its completion. He called on the Senate Committee to exercise restraint in its on-going investigation of EGLP because the State government was making inputs and not concerned with the costing of the project.
Speaking further, Governor Uduaghan said it would cost ten times to build a foundation here than it will cost to do so in other parts of the country and declared his administration's committed towards making inputs in the area, not minding the cost. The Governor advised community youths employed to work at the EGLP site to remain peaceful as government was handling the issue of their welfare with the employers.
In a brief remark, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Gas, Senator Osita Izunaso, said members of the Committee were in Escravos to see what was on ground and to enable them conclude their investigation on the costing of the project.
He said the Committee was keen on knowing how the sum of 2.5 billion dollars so far spent on the EGLP was used, adding that members would later visit Quatar to see a similar project being undertaken by Chevron.
