Oil Royalties: FG Bows to South South Governors

The controversy surrounding the exclusion of payment of royalties to oil-producing communities in the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) is about to be resolved.  The original bill gave five per cent of the royalties to the community and 25 per cent to the states where the oil is produced.

South South Governors rose from a meeting in Asaba, the Delta State capital at the weekend, with a plan to float an Economic Growth Council (EGC) to ensure that the roadmap for the economic integration of the region is developed and implemented.

Amnesty: South South Governors Threaten Pull-out.

Governors of the six states of the South-South geopolitical zone resolved unanimously last night to distance themselves from the amnesty deal granted militants in the oil-rich region by President Umaru Yar'Adua unless the Federal Government withdraws the new Petroleum Industries Bill which is before the National Assembly.

Niger Delta Governors Plan Economic Summit.

THE governors of the Niger Delta states have agreed to set up a 24- man economic committee to be headed by Prof. Pat Utomi. The committee will host an economic summit for the region next year.
